Today, my message is for you. I hope you find some takeaways.
Yesterday, while conducting ESL speaking board exams, I noticed that almost all students were nervous. The fear of facing an exam was evident in various ways—some had breakdowns, others had shivering hands, teary eyes, nervous expressions, smiling faces, confidence, confusion, and more. If we, as adults, were asked to take an exam today, we would likely feel the same nervousness.
As parents, let’s support our children over the next month and help them navigate the exam period smoothly.
A few tips from me as a parent and an educator:
1. Take a break from work and spend time around them. Don’t ask too many questions—your presence alone offers them reassurance and a sense of security.
2. They have already worked hard for two years. Now, it’s just about revising concepts. The hard work is done; this is the time to reinforce what they know.
3. Sleep is essential. A well-rested student can concentrate better and perform more effectively. Ensure they get enough sleep each night.
4. Avoid entertaining guests at home, no matter who they are. They can send their best wishes over the phone instead.
5. As a parent, try to limit your social gatherings and outings for the next month. Your presence and involvement make a difference.
6. Allow them limited screen time for relaxation but set boundaries to keep them focused.
7. Play board games or engage in light activities to help them unwind and refresh their minds.
8. Encourage healthy eating. Unhealthy food can cause lethargy and impact their well-being.
At the end of the day, your time and support matter the most. Be mindful of the mental strain they are experiencing. Stay close, encourage them, and help them navigate this important phase with confidence.
From one mother to another,
Regards,
Chaitali Mehta
